Out on the open seas! Okay, maybe, out on the open lake? We left Oswego early today to get across Lake Ontario with a destination of Trent Port Marina in Trenton, Ontario. The sun was up when we left and made for a pretty start to the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exiting the port of Oswego in New York is exciting and a bit sobering. On the other side of the break wall is Lake Ontario. Just crossing the lake is about 45ish miles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For miles and miles, all we see is water. Even the binoculars can’t find land. It’s really pretty and the weather is really good. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

This is a really deep lake. As you can see, 529 feet, there’s NO WAY we’re going aground here! Lake Ontario is the smallest of the Great Lakes by surface area. Behind Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, it is the third lake by depth at 802 feet. The lake sturgeon is the largest fish in Lake Ontario. Also, Gaasyendietha, the meteor dragon, is rumored to inhabit Lake Ontario. Sadly, there was not a Gaasyendietha sighting today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once we’ve crossed the lake we enter the Bay of Quinte. Around 62 miles long, the bay is pretty large with a width varying from 1 to 6 miles. Lots of birds around, but the best was a of a group of white swans that flew in front of us. The picture does not do it justice, these birds are huge and stunningly beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We get to the marina and get settled and take a walk around. The marina has quite a lot of grass and fresh water weeds around. All I can say is ewwww. I’m a pretty good swimmer and spent many summers as a lifeguard at the town pool. If you fell in the slimy stuff above and wanted me to save you??? Uh, no; I’d be on land yelling SWIM!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saw this baby bunny eating the pretty flowers outside the marina offices. They also have a “help yourself” herb garden. Wonder if the bunny helped himself?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A group of loopers sharing stories and giving advice. It’s a great group of folks and fun to be around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had a really good day today. It was a huge milestone for us taking on Lake Ontario and going to places we’ve never been before. Checking in to Canada was done by phone and an easy process. I hope getting back in to the United States will be equally easy. We’ll be here for one more day, then see if we want to start the Trent Severn waterway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
