Travel day 21 – Trenton, Ontario to Frankford, Ontario

,

As you can see, it was a chilly start to the day (sorry to my southern friends). It did warm up quickly though. We leave the marina, get gassed up and got a pump out then hit the Trent Severn Waterway!

We approached lock 1 and see that the doors were closed, someone else was in the lock going through. We tied off and waited about 30 minutes for the boats ahead of us to “lock through”. They then have the lock drained, they open the doors and in we go.

The waterway is really shallow in some spots. However, it looks like a perfect home for this swan family.

We go through 6 locks today. We stop after lock 6 in Frankford. We’ve seen that the lock doors are typically operated manually with these merry-go-round devices. Clockwise opens the gate, counter clockwise closes the gate. They let us open and close the gates several times for other boats to lock through; a really unique experience.

We get settled for the day and let CJ out. He’s a favorite of the lock staff, especially the lock master Nathan. Throughout the day all of the lock staff were friendly, helpful and would visit with folks. We ask them where a good place for dinner would be and they all agreed we needed to try Dimitri’s Pizzeria and Restaurant. All of us get pizza and it’s delicious.

On the way back from dinner we see this informational sign about Frankford. Very interesting stuff!

We get back to our boats just as the sun is going down. It’s really a pretty place to spend the night. The 3 boats from the left; Miss Peaches, The Lucky Dog and Unbridled. We’ll head out in the morning and try to get to Campbellford.
