Travel day number 8 – Havre de Grace, MD to Delaware City, DE

Got up to try and catch the tide and current today to get through the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal (C&D Canal). I think we did pretty good, a nice ride and a fairly easy one. Riding with the current certainly conserves gas. Many bridges and small communities along the way. This picture is of a small house at the entrance to the C&D canal.

This one was our first bridge of the day. It’s the St. Georges bridge with a height of 135 feet, we easily passed under it, ha ha..

We went under concrete bridges, steel bridges, railroad bridges, but the most unusual and unique thing we went under was this gas line. It’s called the Eastern Shore Pipeline Bridge with a height of 141 feet. I might be wrong, but I think they are really stretching the definition of bridge.

We make it to the Delaware City Marina at low tide. It’s tricky getting in but Doug manages it just fine. The marina does something very interesting; they get you to dock your boat on the starboard side, then you toss the stern line to Charlie (he’s the guy that does the magic). Then, the bow swings around 180 degrees so you are pointing the other way. Charlie ties it off and you toss him the bow line and you’re done. It was magnificent to see him work. Here are all of the boats lined up, pointing the the right way to get out in the morning.

After we get settled, we head to check in and attend a weather briefing for travel tomorrow. An AGLCA member, Foster Shucker, gives the briefing each day at 4. It was very informative, we’re grateful that he drives 30 minutes from home to help everyone get down the Delaware Bay safely. After, we had dinner and then to the ice cream shop for dessert. I got the Pirates Treasure which is kind of like cookies and cream, but with lots of goodies, mini M&M’s, chocolate chunks, cookies and other things that were very tasty.

We’ve decide that we will try to get to Cape May, NJ tomorrow. It will be a long day, but when we get there we’ll relax for a couple of days, probably staying through the weekend.

Pipeline bridge… I’m with you on the “stretch” thing.

Really cool about the weather briefing. I’ll bet that’s a rare bonus.

How was the Pirate”s Treasure? Sounds like lots of flavors to discover!

Safe and pleasant travels to Cape May you guys! Please give CJ a scratch behind the ears for us!

Well maybe you are on to something call it the pipeline stretch `,~). Bridges are kool, light houses are kool, but ice cream that’s just so kool it’s cold. Never thought about rolling with the tide to save fuel. Very Smart!!!
